Warming power for the ages

The first documented use of heat for healing, or thermotherapy, dates to Hippocrates in 400 BC; however, the practice has mostly been in use since the earliest human days. Depending on the time and the culture, that heat may have come from as simple as source as direct sun exposure or fire-heated stones or even smoldering coals and irons.

 

Regardless, the science is the same. Heat on the body dilates blood vessels, increasing circulation to the affected area while flushing toxins and wastes. When applied to sore or stiff muscles, heat relieves pain – possibly by numbing nerve endings – while oxygen in the blood helps fix soft tissue and relax muscles.
